For me, the secret to great fashion writing is a combination of several very simple ideas.
The combination of these ideas is what distinguishes great writing from mediocre fashion writing.

1. Writing is communication.
2. “What’s my motivation?”
3. Cultivate a positive tone.
4. Never forget your audience.
5. Find your own voice.

Young men’s style is sometimes tough and usually personal.  In this case, it is about the accessories – “Knuckle Dusters,” and customized neck chains.   The was dog tag made in shop class and the bullets purchased at Crawford Coin Stamp Militaria, in New Westminster.  The Levis jean vest was once a jacket, till the sleeves were cut off.

A stroll down Main Street offers fashion shoppers multiple options when it comes to local designers, vintage, eco-conscious fashions and lunch. Novelties abound. You can’t get this stuff at the mall.

Marc Jacobs’ ladylike designs for Louis Vuitton are retro fresh and a welcome return to the hourglass feminine silhouette. It is rare to see such a consistent silhouette but Marc Jacobs is strong and uncompromising in his presentation. Emphasis is on the waist and bust with full circle skirts dominating the collection. Corset tops, belted waists and fitted waistlines emphasize the new silhouette. Fabrics are structured and skirts are interlined. Substantive fabrics further reinforce the hourglass shape. Though fitted, the collection stops short of being constricting. Three-quarter length coats are tailored with a nipped in waistline, wider collar and lapels.

Predicting Trends for the Next Fashion Cycle

The current fashion cycle, typically a seven to eight year span is coming to an end. The “New Look,” for Vancouver fashion will be influenced by global fashion trends as well as style trends that are unique to Vancouver. Trends in women’s wear that will shape the next fashion cycle are:

1. Pants and Streamlined or Sculptural Sportswear Tops

2. Feminine Separates

3. The Demise of Couture and the Rise of Independent Designers

4. Lingerie and “Old World” Luxury take Focus

5. Throw-Away Fashion Is Out, Quality Fashion Is In

There were less outrageous fashion at the Oscars this year than in previous years. Those who did make it to my “Most Entertaining,” list included, Jennifer Lopez, Charlize Theron, Robert Downey Jr. and Molly Ringwald.

The winners in the “Best Dressed,’ category are: Kate Winslet, Mo’Nique, Carmen Diaz and Hellen Mirren are on my “Best Dressed,” list this year.  Kate Winslet was exquisite in a Yves St. Laurent  corset top and satin draped skirt.  The subtle metallic of the top and the soft sheen of the skirt picked up the light [...]

Oscar Fashion nominees for ”Boring” fashions include:  My nominees for the most “Boring” Oscar Fashions include Nicole Richie and  Victoria Beckham.  Nicole Richie’s caftan style gown had an interesting cut-out back detail that was lost in the front view photos.  The beaded detail of the gown did not show up under the lights and the overall look was that [...]

I know that many famous Oscar fashion reviewers will have “Best” and “Worst” dressed categories.
My approach is different. I have three categories.
1. Best Dressed
2. Most Entertaining
3. Boring (this is my WORST category)

Defining moments can change the future. The Winter Olympics has helped us to see Vancouver style in a global context. At moments like this it is easy to see that Vancouver remains firmly rooted in sportswear. Our “laid back” hoodies and raingear, sport pants and athletic shoes, produce a style that is Vancouver’s own.

In Vancouver, sportswear is not just what we wear but also what we do. Unlike the fashionable sportswear coming out of New York, Vancouver sportswear is based on an active, outdoor lifestyle first and fashion second. Vancouver based sportswear companies that design and manufacture active sportswear include lululemon, Mountain Equipment Co-Op, Arc’teryx, Sugoi and others. These world class companies deserve all the added recognition that will come as a result of Vancouver’s Winter Olympics. Along with our Olympic athletes, Vancouver sportswear has achieved a world class presence on the global stage.
